Top Military Leaders Meet Secretly in Germany Amid Iran Tensions

Senior military officials from the United States, Israel, and several Arab nations convened in Germany last week for a discreet meeting to discuss the ongoing war with Iran and escalating regional tensions. The gathering, organized by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) head General Brad Cooper, included the chiefs of staff from Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and Egypt. This marks the first such meeting since the U.S. and Israel began their conflict with Iran over six months ago, and it provided a rare opportunity for leaders from countries without diplomatic ties to Israel to exchange views.

During the conference, General Cooper assured attendees that the U.S. military would not withdraw from the region despite Iranian attacks on American bases. He also briefed them on U.S. plans to expand ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz. Israeli Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Aviv Kochavi briefed the participants on the IDF's operations across various fronts. CENTCOM confirmed the meeting, stating that senior military leaders from eight nations discussed opportunities to enhance security cooperation in the Middle East.

The meeting also addressed ongoing discussions between Israel and Saudi Arabia, facilitated by CENTCOM, regarding potential Israeli support for Saudi military operations against the Houthis. This support could include intelligence and tactical assistance, similar to aid provided to the United Arab Emirates. The discussions come amid escalating Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, their ground advances, and their effective control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait in the Red Sea.

This high-level military engagement underscores the deepening security cooperation between Israel and Arab nations, particularly since the Abraham Accords in September 2020. Following these accords, Israel was transferred from U.S. European Command to CENTCOM, enabling greater military collaboration with Arab states on regional security, including air and missile defense. Israel has previously provided defensive and offensive support to the UAE, including deploying its Iron Dome missile defense system and offering real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
