Israel Strikes Hamas Commanders in Gaza, Hezbollah Launchers in Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency conducted a targeted strike in northern Gaza overnight Tuesday, eliminating Ahmed Batash, identified as the commander of Hamas's Jabalia battalion in the northern brigade. According to the IDF, Batash was responsible for managing and organizing the northern brigade's weaponry and coordinating arms and military equipment supplies to militants. The IDF stated that Batash was preparing attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and was working to restore the group's military capabilities, which the army considers a systematic violation of the ceasefire. The strike was intended to neutralize the threat he posed. The IDF reported taking measures to minimize civilian risk before the strike, including the use of precision munitions and aerial surveillance.

This operation was part of a broader series of Israeli actions against Hamas in the past day. On Monday, Rafat Abu-Zamar, a company commander in Hamas's operational unit, was killed in Khan Younis. The IDF claims he trained militants prior to the October 7, 2023, attack and was recently involved in training new recruits and rebuilding the group's military potential. Also on Monday, an IDF strike in Gaza killed Muhammad Khader Fahmi Agour, identified by the army as a Hamas member involved in weapons manufacturing. The IDF asserted that all three individuals were involved in preparing attacks and violating the ceasefire.

Concurrently, Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon discovered a Hezbollah rocket launcher and several rockets on the Lebanese side of Mount Dov. The IDF reported that the munitions were found on Sunday during a survey of an area within the buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The army believes Hezbollah abandoned the weapons after a ceasefire took effect in April.
