Israel Strikes Hamas in Gaza; Lebanon Border Tensions Rise
The Israeli military announced it conducted an airstrike in Gaza City, eliminating two Hamas operatives involved in developing weapons and planning terror attacks. The IDF stated that measures were taken to minimize civilian harm before the strike, which targeted Mahmoud Hassan Ali Abu Nada and Abdel Rahim Ahmed Khalil Hawar, described as key figures in Hamas's engineering unit. Palestinian media reported two killed and 13 wounded in a separate drone strike on a vehicle in Gaza City's Tal al-Hawa neighborhood.
In Lebanon, Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that the Ali Taher ridge is part of Israel's security zone and "red line," vowing that the IDF is operationally prepared to control it and will eliminate anyone attempting to establish a presence there, including Hezbollah. This statement comes amid efforts by Lebanon and France to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, beyond its year-end expiration, a move Israel reportedly opposes, with the US position unclear.
Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions persist in the region. Oman's Foreign Minister announced the cancellation of a planned meeting between Gulf states and Iran concerning maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, citing a need to "ensure agreements are reached." Separately, the US Embassy in Beirut confirmed a meeting between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors in Washington this October to discuss the implementation of a US-mediated framework agreement aimed at peace.
In Iran, internal political divisions are reportedly intensifying, with factions split over resuming negotiations with the US. According to sources cited by The New York Times, a July attack on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz was initiated by a hardline faction without the knowledge of President Masoud Pezeshkian, the Revolutionary Guards commander, or the Supreme National Security Council, jeopardizing a potential deal with Washington. An investigation reportedly identified Hossein Taeb, former intelligence chief of the Revolutionary Guards, as the instigator.
Further afield, the US, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen are trading accusations following the Houthis' rapid takeover of the port city of Mokha and Perim Island. Yemeni commanders reportedly requested air support during the Houthi offensive, but promised Saudi assistance from CENTCOM did not materialize. Regional sources described the event as a "massive Saudi-American failure," while others pointed to failures within Yemeni forces and the vacuum left by the UAE's withdrawal.
