Tel Aviv Beachgoers' Rescue Attempt of Stranded Dolphin Criticized by Experts
A striped dolphin was found alive on Jerusalem Beach in Tel Aviv on Tuesday morning, prompting beachgoers and staff to push the animal back into the sea. While their intentions were good, experts from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority stated that such hasty actions can be dangerous for stranded marine mammals.
The striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) is common in the Mediterranean, but when found on shore, it typically indicates the animal is severely ill, injured, or exhausted and requires professional help, not immediate return to the water. Healthy dolphins are capable of navigating waves and currents and do not voluntarily beach themselves.
