Researchers Highlight Threats to Bottlenose Dolphins Along Israel's Mediterranean Coast

The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a widely recognized and beloved marine mammal known for its high intelligence, complex social structures, and adaptive behaviors. Found year-round along Israel's Mediterranean coastline at depths of 30 to 60 meters, this species is globally classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN. However, local populations in the eastern Mediterranean face significant threats primarily due to human activities.

Dr. Aviad Sheinin, founder of the Dolphin and Sea Center, co-CEO of the Delphis Association, and head of marine apex predator research at the Maurice Kahn Marine Research Station at the University of Haifa, has studied marine mammals for over 25 years. He explains that continuous monitoring of Israel's dolphin populations has been conducted for more than two decades, using sea surveys, individual identification through unique dorsal fin markings, underwater acoustic monitoring, and public reports of stranded or injured animals. Innovative technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence, and long-term individual tracking are also employed.

Bottlenose dolphins play a crucial ecological role as marine apex predators, serving as indicators of ocean health. Their populations are threatened by fishing nets, overfishing, chemical and plastic pollution, underwater noise from vessels and industrial activities, and habitat disruption from infrastructure development and seismic surveys. Dr. Sheinin emphasizes the dolphins' remarkable intelligence and social flexibility, noting their ability to learn new hunting techniques, such as exploiting purse seine fishing activities along Israel's coast.

The eastern Mediterranean is warming rapidly due to climate change, altering fish populations and introducing tropical species via the Suez Canal, which affects dolphin food availability and reproductive patterns. Research shows most dolphin births occur in late spring and summer, correlating with rising sea temperatures. Some female dolphins have been tracked for nearly 20 years, with multi-generational offspring documented, highlighting the importance of local habitats for breeding and calf rearing.

Public involvement is vital for dolphin conservation. Dr. Sheinin urges reducing single-use plastics, keeping beaches and seas clean, reporting sightings of live or distressed marine mammals, and maintaining respectful distances from dolphins in the wild. Supporting organizations like Delphis also contributes to protecting these charismatic marine animals. The IUCN's recognition of Israel's continental shelf as a critical marine mammal habitat underscores the region's significance for dolphin conservation efforts.
