OpenAI Acquires Israeli AI Imaging Startup Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million

OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, an Israeli startup specializing in AI-powered smartphone camera technology, for over $300 million. The deal, which occurred secretly in recent months, significantly increases the startup's valuation from approximately $100 million in its last funding round a year ago.

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Eiger and Tom Birch, former Apple engineers who previously worked on iPhone camera technologies, including portrait mode. Their startup aimed to overcome the limitations of incremental improvements in smartphone camera quality by integrating hardware and software. The company's AI technology enhances smartphone photos to approach the quality of DSLR cameras and has already been implemented in zoom features for the Chinese brand Honor.

Eiger, who grew up in Afula and studied at the Technion, has a history in imaging technology. He previously founded LinX Imaging, which focused on camera technologies and was acquired by Apple in 2015. After working at Apple, Eiger co-founded Glass Imaging with Birch. The startup had raised around $30 million from investors, including Alphabet's venture capital arm GV and Insight Partners.

In a 2022 interview, the founders expressed their belief that smartphone camera quality was nearing a "glass ceiling," with improvements becoming more gradual. This acquisition by OpenAI coincides with the AI company's own ventures into hardware and consumer devices. OpenAI is collaborating with Jony Ive, former Apple design chief, following its $6.5 billion acquisition of his startup, LoveFrom, in 2025. However, OpenAI's specific plans for Glass Imaging's technology remain unclear, and it is unknown if it will be integrated into the device being developed with Ive.
