OpenAI Acquires Israeli Startup Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million
Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a startup specializing in AI-powered smartphone photography technology, for over $300 million. The deal, reported by The Wall Street Journal, significantly increases the valuation of Glass Imaging from its previous funding round of approximately $100 million last year.
Founded in 2019 by Ziv Grav and Tom Birch, Glass Imaging aimed to bridge the gap between smartphone cameras and professional DSLR quality. Both founders previously worked at Apple, contributing to features like Portrait Mode. Grav, an Israeli who studied at the Technion and worked at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, has maintained ties to the Israeli tech scene, reportedly advising the company OutSense.
The startup's core technology uses AI to enhance smartphone image quality, particularly in zoom capabilities, striving to match professional camera standards. Glass Imaging had previously raised around $30 million from investors including GV, Alphabet's venture capital arm, and Insight Partners. Their technology has already been integrated into smartphones by the Chinese brand Honor.
While OpenAI's specific plans for the acquired technology remain undisclosed, the acquisition aligns with its broader consumer device initiatives. OpenAI is reportedly collaborating with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on developing new devices, a partnership that began with the acquisition of Ive's company, io Products, for $6.5 billion in 2025. The integration of Glass Imaging's advanced photography and image processing capabilities could bolster these new hardware ventures, though its direct application to the joint project is not yet confirmed.
