OpenAI Acquires AI Camera Startup Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million

OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a startup specializing in AI-powered smartphone camera technology, in a deal valued at over $300 million. The acquisition, which occurred in recent months, was revealed by sources familiar with the matter to The Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging's technology uses artificial intelligence to enhance smartphone photos, aiming to achieve quality comparable to DSLR cameras.

This valuation represents a significant increase for Glass Imaging, which was assessed at approximately $100 million during a funding round last year. The specific plans for integrating Glass Imaging's technology into OpenAI's products remain undisclosed. However, the move comes as OpenAI is also collaborating with former Apple executive Jony Ive on a secret new device. OpenAI brought Ive on board in 2025 following its $6.5 billion acquisition of his startup, io Products, to develop consumer hardware and shape the future of AI-powered products.

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Eiger and Tom Bishop, both former Apple employees who worked on camera technologies, including the iPhone's portrait mode. They believed smartphone camera quality was nearing a plateau and sought to innovate through a combination of hardware and software, aiming to rethink camera technology independently of larger corporate constraints.

The acquisition of Glass Imaging follows a series of recent purchases by OpenAI, including the web program TBPN and an open-source tool developer. These moves occur as the company prepares for its anticipated initial public offering next year.
