Israel Calls for International Coalition Against Houthi Threat in Bab al-Mandab Strait

Following the Houthi rebels' takeover of the Bab al-Mandab Strait in Yemen over the weekend, Israeli officials believe an international coalition will be necessary to counter the developing threat. A senior Israeli official warned Channel News (Kan News) that failure to establish such a coalition could lead to anarchy in one of the world's most crucial shipping lanes. The strategic strait, now under Houthi control, is a vital artery through which hundreds of vessels pass daily en route to and from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Israel.

The Houthi presence at this location grants them the operational capability to block maritime traffic using simple and inexpensive means, such as Kornet missiles or explosive boats, without requiring advanced radar systems or shore-to-sea missiles. Despite rising tensions, Israel's current policy is to avoid direct intervention in the ongoing conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. Concurrently, discussions have begun with regional partners, led by the United States, to formulate a response to the international risk posed by the Houthi actions.
