Israel Assesses Need for International Coalition Against Houthi Anarchy

Israel believes an international coalition is necessary to counter the Houthi rebels following their takeover of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical global shipping lane. A senior Israeli official warned that without such a coalition, "anarchy could erupt in one of the world's most central shipping routes." Hundreds of vessels pass through the strait daily, connecting Asia to Africa and the Middle East, including Israel. The Houthis can potentially block the strait using relatively simple means like Kornet missiles or explosive boats, bypassing the need for advanced radar or coastal defense systems. Israel currently prefers not to intervene directly in the conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, though discussions with regional partners, led by the United States, have commenced. The Houthi rebels, reportedly at Iran's behest, have exploited a lack of international attention to solidify their control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Their capture of the nearby port city of Al Mukha is considered a significant achievement in recent years. Saudi Arabia had previously requested the U.S. to lead a war against the Houthis, but this request was denied.
