Israel Prepares Forceful Response to Gaza Flotilla Attempt

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing for the arrival of a new flotilla of pro-Palestinian activists aiming to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. The military's primary objective is to prevent the vessels from reaching the Gaza coast unimpeded. According to Channel 12, the flotilla is expected to depart from Sicily in late October, initially comprising a few ships and dozens of participants, with potential for expansion.

The IDF's naval forces are planning for multiple scenarios, including issuing warnings to the ships to halt their advance. If the crews refuse to comply, Israeli naval commandos, specifically from the Shayetet 13 unit, may be deployed to intercept them. This approach forces the flotilla organizers to choose between adhering to Israeli military demands or facing a forceful interception.

Israel's defense establishment is determined to prevent the establishment of sea routes that bypass its control and lead directly to Gaza. This preparation takes into account lessons learned from a previous interception five months ago, where Israeli commandos intercepted activist ships bound for Gaza. While that operation concluded without major clashes, with participants detained and later deported, it led to a diplomatic incident.

Following the previous interception, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released a video showing handcuffed activists on the floor with an Israeli flag, which provoked strong criticism in Europe and a diplomatic fallout. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu subsequently criticized Ben-Gvir's actions, stating that while Israel would continue to thwart such provocations, the treatment of detainees must adhere to national standards.
