Israel Prepares to Intercept New Gaza Flotilla

Israel's security establishment is making intensive preparations for a new pro-Palestinian flotilla expected to depart from Sicily, Italy, next month with the stated goal of breaking the maritime blockade on the Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have decided not to allow any vessels to cross into Israeli territorial waters, maintaining the full embargo. Initial reports suggest the current initiative is small, involving only a few boats and dozens of activists, but organizers anticipate more participants and vessels will join as the late October departure date approaches.

In anticipation of potential non-compliance, the IDF is preparing for the possibility that naval commandos, likely from the elite Shayetet 13 unit, may need to forcibly board the ships if activists refuse to heed warnings at sea. This readiness comes just five months after a similar flotilla from Turkey was intercepted in May. During that incident, Israeli naval forces took control of the vessels, detained the activists, and subsequently deported them.

The May operation was relatively quiet militarily, but subsequent events at the port of Ashdod sparked significant diplomatic fallout. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's release of footage showing him waving an Israeli flag over detained activists on the ground led to the summoning of Israeli ambassadors in Europe and international condemnation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Ben-Gvir's actions at the time, emphasizing that while Israel would prevent provocations by terror supporters, the treatment of detainees must adhere to accepted norms.
