Israeli Navy Strengthens Maritime Defense Off Gaza After October 7 Attack
In a recent patrol off the coast of Gaza, commanders of the Israeli Navy's Bay Knights Squadron slowed their Sa'ar 5-class missile boat near the former active docking area of Gaza City, now largely destroyed since the October 7 Hamas attack. That morning, Hamas naval commandos launched a surprise raid using seven boats, killing 20 militants but allowing 18 to reach Israeli shores and carry out further attacks. This event exposed critical intelligence and operational gaps, prompting significant structural and tactical changes within the Israeli Navy.
Navy Chief David Salama initiated reforms, accelerated by current commander Major General Eyal Harel, emphasizing continuous adaptation to Hamas's evolving maritime tactics, which include divers, underwater vehicles, fast boats, and drones. The Navy, Shin Bet, and Military Intelligence have integrated efforts to systematically degrade Hamas and Islamic Jihad's sea capabilities. A former Shayetet 13 commander now leads the operational division in Military Intelligence, enhancing maritime threat assessment and intelligence collection.
The new defense system, dubbed the "Iron Wall," combines advanced technology with layered forces across sea, air, and land to maintain constant surveillance and rapid response. New units, including rapid-response ATV teams, were established to prevent infiltration attempts along the coast. The upgraded Sa'ar 5 boats feature enhanced surveillance and firepower, capable of extended missions and quick maneuvers. Crews remain vigilant against suspicious objects and drone threats, ready to neutralize any potential danger immediately.
A recent security incident near Kibbutz Zikim highlighted ongoing challenges. An initial alert of a possible infiltration turned out to be a criminal act involving copper theft, but the rapid mobilization of over 140 soldiers, police, and border guards demonstrated improved readiness. The incident underscored the need for tighter coordination between military and civilian security forces.
Despite the Navy's hardline stance and the disappearance of Hamas's motorized boats from the area, commanders remain alert to the possibility of underwater infiltrations and other unconventional threats. They continue rigorous training to counter scenarios involving adverse weather and surprise attacks, ensuring the multi-layered defense system remains robust against future maritime threats from Gaza.
