IDF Implements Major Defense Overhaul Following Hamas Attack Lessons
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have completed significant changes to their defense doctrine, readiness orders, and force structure nearly three years after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The new approach shifts from defending the border line to a forward defense strategy. Since the war began, the IDF has controlled approximately 1,220 square kilometers of enemy territory, with the current defense scope hundreds of percent larger than before the conflict.
A new readiness order, named "Ra'am," has been developed to address both single-front and multi-front scenarios. This order grants division and command commanders immediate authority to deploy regular and reserve forces rapidly, enabling faster operational responses in extreme situations. Unlike the pre-war period when each sector had a single response order, now each command has a broad range of tailored operational responses to different event types, improving precision and speed.
Additionally, readiness times for forces have been shortened, and the order of battle for key headquarters-assigned battalions has been expanded. The IDF is also establishing a Security Brigade within the Operations Directorate, responsible for consolidating all security domains, including information security, base protection, and personal security. This brigade is currently being formed and is expected to become operational in the coming months.
Regarding Lebanon, the IDF maintains the capability to neutralize threats but remains limited in broader operations. During a recent visit to the Bofor area, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir emphasized that the Lebanese army must fulfill its obligations under the agreement by clearing Hezbollah militants from the area. Zamir affirmed that the IDF will continue threat removal and is prepared to launch rapid attacks if ceasefire terms are violated.
