Increased Competition on New York Route Fails to Drop Flights Below $1,000

Competition on the popular route to New York has intensified with Israir Airlines launching its inaugural flight on Thursday. The Israeli carrier joins existing Israeli airlines El Al and Arkia, as well as American carriers United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which recently resumed service to Israel.

Despite the increased number of airlines operating the route, a price check for flights in the coming months reveals that round-trip tickets for direct flights, including a checked bag, carry-on, seat selection, and a meal, still exceed $1,000. Prices observed ranged from $1,198 to $2,498 for round-trip tickets.

Airline pricing is highly dependent on supply and demand for specific dates, with no single airline consistently offering the lowest fares. While foreign airlines generally offered similar, relatively lower prices during the tested periods in October, November, and December, flexibility with travel dates is crucial for finding more affordable options. United Airlines offered a comparatively lower price of $1,164 round-trip during the check.

The expectation was that the expanded competition would lead to lower prices, but current findings indicate that fares have not yet dropped below the $1,000 threshold for round-trip travel. Passengers are advised to compare prices across airlines and be flexible with their travel dates to secure the best deals.
