Israel Volleyball Team Stages Comeback Victory Over Portugal in European Championship

The Israeli national volleyball team achieved its first victory in the European Championship on Sunday, defeating Portugal 3-2 after a significant comeback. Israel trailed two sets to one, with Portugal winning the first, third, and fourth sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-22). However, Israel rallied to win the second set 25-20 and then dominated the final two sets, 25-22 and 15-7, to secure the match.

This win marks Israel's first in the tournament, following earlier losses to world number one Poland (3-0) and Ukraine (3-1). The team is set to face host nation Bulgaria next, with a victory potentially securing their advancement to the next stage.

Mark Rore was instrumental in the win, scoring 24 points despite playing with a back injury and receiving injections. Shai Lieberman also contributed significantly with 22 points. Coach Itamar Stein described the match as a "rollercoaster" and praised the team's resilience and the support of the fans.

Rore expressed his elation, stating, "We showed that we have the ability to play at the highest levels." He highlighted the team's focus and refusal to give up, even when behind, knowing that winning two sets could turn the tide. He also acknowledged Portugal's errors in the third set which allowed Israel to regain momentum.

Looking ahead, Stein acknowledged the upcoming match against Bulgaria will be difficult, especially playing in front of a large home crowd, but expressed the team's determination to compete strongly and seize any opportunities.
