Israel Falls to World No. 1 Poland in European Volleyball Championship

The Israeli men's national volleyball team lost its second match at the European Championship in Bulgaria, falling 3-0 to world number one Poland. The team played without injured player Mark Ruhra, showing flashes of quality volleyball at times, and now prepares for a decisive match against Portugal on Sunday.

Facing the Polish volleyball powerhouse, ranked first globally, in the second round of the championship held in Bulgaria, the Israeli team succumbed to a 3-0 defeat with set scores of 25:16, 25:17, and 25:18. The Israeli squad had to contend with the absence of Mark Ruhra, who sustained an injury during the previous day's game and was missing from the rotation. The task was particularly challenging against the superior quality and depth of the Polish team.

The match took place in a vibrant atmosphere, with hundreds of Polish fans filling the stands and dozens of Israeli supporters cheering loudly. Despite the Polish dominance, Itamar Stein's Israeli players fought for every ball, occasionally displaying sparks of potential and good play, looking ahead to crucial upcoming matches. To maintain their chances of advancing to the round of 16, Israel must defeat Portugal on Sunday.

Coach Itamar Stein commented on the match, acknowledging the significant occasion and the atmosphere created by both sets of fans. He stated, "You feel that this is a big occasion. We played against the best team in the world today. It was difficult on the court, especially without Mark, who is a significant force for us, but I feel we competed with honor. There were moments where we felt the difference in levels, but overall, we fought every time."

Stein added, "It was a great experience and a less than ideal result, but we are already looking ahead to tomorrow's game against Portugal, which is the game we are aiming for." He explained that while Ukraine was a potential surprise, Portugal and Macedonia were the teams Israel targeted for victory. "Tomorrow we will give everything with the goal of winning," he concluded.

Standout players for Israel included Shi Liberman with 15 points and Ilya Goldrin, who played well. The team will face Portugal on Sunday at 4:00 PM in a critical match where a victory is necessary to stay in contention for advancing to the next stage.
