Israel Volleyball Team Stages Dramatic Comeback to Defeat Portugal

The Israeli national volleyball team achieved a significant victory on Sunday, defeating Portugal 3-2 in a remarkable comeback at the European Championship in Bulgaria. Israel found themselves trailing 2-1 in sets after losing the first three matches with scores of 25-19, 20-25, and 25-20. However, they rallied to win the final two sets, 25-22 and 15-7, securing their first win of the tournament.

This victory follows earlier losses for Israel, including a 3-0 defeat to world-ranked Poland and a 3-1 loss to Ukraine in their opening match. The team's next challenge is a match against host nation Bulgaria on Monday, where a win could be crucial for advancing to the next stage.

The decisive fifth set saw Israel dominate with aggressive play, strong defense, and smart tactics, culminating in a commanding 15-7 win. Key players in the match were Mark Rura, who scored 24 points despite a back injury and receiving injections, and Shi Lieberman, who contributed 22 points.

Head coach Itamar Stein described the game as a "rollercoaster," praising his team's resilience and the support from the fans. He highlighted Rura's exceptional performance under difficult circumstances. "Something was released in the fifth set, that was our volleyball: another ball in defense, a high pass, aggression, and intelligence," Stein stated.

Player Mark Rura expressed the team's elation, emphasizing their ability to compete at a high level. He noted that Portugal made errors in the third set, allowing Israel to regain focus. "We were there 100% all the way and simply didn't give up," Rura said.
