Israel Volleyball Team Stages Comeback Victory Over Portugal

The Israeli national volleyball team achieved its first victory in the European Championship on Sunday, defeating Portugal 3-2 after a significant comeback. Israel trailed two sets to one, losing the first three sets with scores of 25-19, 20-25, and 25-20. However, they rallied to win the final two sets 25-22 and 15-7, securing the match.

This win follows earlier losses for Israel in the tournament, including a 3-0 defeat to world number one Poland and a 3-1 loss to Ukraine. Israel's next match is against host nation Bulgaria, with a victory potentially securing advancement to the next stage.

The decisive fifth set saw Israel dominate with aggressive play, strong defense, and smart tactics, culminating in a 15-7 win. Key players in the victory were Mark Rura, who scored 24 points despite a back injury and receiving injections, and Shi Liberman, who contributed 22 points.

Head coach Itamar Stein described the match as a "rollercoaster" and praised the team's resilience. He also highlighted the support of the fans and Rura's exceptional performance. "Something was released in the fifth set, that was our volleyball," Stein stated, emphasizing the team's defensive effort, passing, aggression, and intelligence.

Player Mark Rura expressed the team's elation and belief in their ability to compete at high levels. He noted that Portugal made unforced errors in the third set, allowing Israel to maintain focus and never give up, even when behind. "We were there 100% all the way and just didn't give up," Rura said.
