Israeli Volleyball Star Aims for European Championship Podium

The Israeli men's national volleyball team is set to compete in the European Championship starting Thursday, marking their first qualification for the tournament since 1971. While this is their second consecutive appearance, the 2023 qualification was achieved through athletic merit, unlike their 2021 participation which was as hosts. In recent years, the team has reached the semi-finals of the European League twice, signaling their growing strength on the continent, though this success has largely gone unnoticed domestically.

Twenty-year-old star player Mark Rura, considered a veteran despite his age, expressed frustration with the lack of media coverage in Israel. "I think they don't publish and show our team and our league enough," Rura stated upon arriving in Bulgaria for the championship. He noted the stark contrast with the local atmosphere and promotion surrounding the event in Bulgaria. Rura, who is embarking on his third season playing abroad, began his European career at 18 in Germany under current national team coach Itamar Stein, who he credits with significant personal and professional development during challenging times away from home.

Rura recently won a bronze medal with the U22 team at the European Championship and has signed with a team in the Japanese league, considered one of the world's strongest. He highlighted Japan's exceptional sports culture, respect for players, and large venue capacities, as well as the significant financial benefits compared to playing in Europe or Israel. He explained that the national team's recent success stems from coach Stein's vision of building around young players like himself, fostering a strong team dynamic where players function like family and prioritize collective success over individual egos.

The team's stated goal for the European Championship is to advance from the preliminary group to the round of 16. However, Rura believes the team can achieve more, citing volleyball's inherent unpredictability. "In my dream, I see us on the podium," he confessed. His personal aspirations include continued professional and financial growth, while his national team dreams extend to reaching the World Championship and, ultimately, the Olympics, with the 2032 Games being a realistic target.

The Israeli team is grouped with Ukraine, Poland, Portugal, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia. Advancing to the round of 16 requires finishing in the top four of their group.
