Israeli Volleyball Star Eyes European Championship Podium Finish

The Israeli men's national volleyball team is set to compete in the European Championship starting Thursday, marking their first qualification for the tournament since 1971. While this is their second consecutive appearance, the 2023 qualification was achieved through athletic merit, unlike their 2021 participation which was as hosts. In recent years, the team has reached the semi-finals of the European League twice, signaling their growing strength on the continent, though this success has largely gone unnoticed within Israel.

Twenty-year-old star player Mark Reura, considered a veteran despite his age, expressed frustration with the lack of media coverage for the team and the domestic league. "I think they don't publish and show our team and our league enough," Reura stated upon arriving in Bulgaria for the championship. He noted the stark contrast with the enthusiastic atmosphere surrounding the tournament in the host country.

Reura, who began playing volleyball in a "hobby group" in Kfar Saba, has rapidly progressed in his career. He played in Germany under current national team coach Itamar Stein, who he credits with significant personal and professional support during his early years abroad. After winning a bronze medal with the U22 team at the European Championship this summer, Reura signed with a team in Japan's highly competitive league, seeking further advancement and financial security.

He described the sports culture in Japan as exceptional, with immense respect for players and large venues, noting that players of his caliber earn significantly more there than in Europe or Israel. Reura attributes the national team's recent success to coach Stein's vision of building the team around young players like himself, integrated with experienced veterans, and fostering a strong familial bond within the squad.

The team's stated goal for the European Championship is to advance from the preliminary group to the round of 16. However, Reura believes the team can achieve more, aiming for a podium finish. "In my dream, I see us on the podium," he said. His personal aspirations include continued professional and financial growth, while his ultimate team goals are to succeed in the current championship, qualify for the next one, aim for the World Championship, and ultimately, the Olympics, with the 2032 Games being a realistic target.
