Arab Parties Sign Vote-Sharing Deal Ahead of Knesset Elections

The Joint List and the United Arab List have signed a surplus vote agreement aimed at preventing vote wastage and enhancing their chances of securing additional Knesset seats in the upcoming elections. The agreement also includes a commitment from both parties to conduct a "fair and clean electoral campaign, without defamation, incitement, or fraud." They urged their activists and supporters to maintain respectful discourse despite political differences.

The deal is set to be submitted to the Central Elections Committee for final approval after the electoral lists are officially certified. This move follows the previous elections where three Arab lists ran separately, failing to secure a surplus vote agreement, which contributed to "The Movement" failing to pass the electoral threshold in 2022.

In a parallel development, four parties from the "Change Bloc" have also signed surplus vote agreements. These include Yisrael Beiteinu with B'Yachad and Yishai, along with the Democrats. Gadi Eisenkot, head of the Yishai party, stated that these alliances aim to prevent vote loss and bolster the "Change Bloc" to replace the current government. Yair Golan's party welcomed the agreement, emphasizing the goal of maximizing the bloc's strength.

Meanwhile, the Likud party is expected to sign a surplus vote agreement with the Religious Zionism party. This potential deal could complicate calculations for Otzma Yehudit, which is reportedly hesitant to sign a similar agreement with the "People of Israel" party.

A surplus vote agreement is a pre-election understanding between two lists to cooperate in distributing remaining seats after the initial allocation. This system ensures that votes not sufficient for a full seat can contribute to a partner list gaining an additional seat, thereby preventing vote wastage.
