Oscar Gloukh Faces Tough Competition for Playing Time at Ajax

Israeli midfielder Oscar Gloukh is facing a challenging situation at Ajax Amsterdam, with Dutch outlet FootballTransfers reporting that his regular starting position is uncertain. After a promising start to the season, Gloukh's role has diminished due to increased competition for places in the squad.

Gloukh joined Ajax in the summer of 2025 from Salzburg, where he had two successful seasons, contributing to 23 and 19 goals respectively. In his first season in Amsterdam, he made 39 appearances, starting 24 games, and scored nine goals while providing seven assists.

However, his natural position as an attacking midfielder is currently occupied by Julian Brandt. Gloukh has been shifted to the left wing, but faces significant competition there as well, particularly with the expected return of Steven Bergwijn from injury in October. FootballTransfers suggests Gloukh may struggle to secure a consistent spot in the starting lineup.

The Dutch publication noted that while Gloukh can play on the left wing, the role might not suit him as well, as coach Michel Sanchez prefers wingers to maintain width. This could hinder Gloukh's ability to showcase his skills as effectively as he did as an attacking midfielder, placing him in a difficult predicament.

FootballTransfers also pointed to a decline in Gloukh's output since being moved to a wider position. As an attacking midfielder, he scored four goals and provided one assist, but his contribution has lessened on the left wing. The report indicates he sometimes holds onto the ball too long and makes decisions late, contrasting with the team's need for quick play and width.

Despite the current challenges, the outlet did not rule out the possibility of Gloukh regaining a more significant role later in the season, citing that the hierarchy can change due to form, injuries, and tactics. However, his ideal position is currently taken, and the left-wing role is considered a less suitable fit.
