Israel Demolishes School in Mansouri, Declares Security Zone in South Lebanon

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the establishment of a "security zone" stretching from the Lebanese coast to the Mount Hermon region, stating it is in preparation for "continued battle." This escalation follows a large explosion carried out by the Israeli military in the Al-Taher heights on Thursday evening, which caused tremors felt in surrounding areas. The military stated the operation targeted over two kilometers of Hezbollah underground tunnels and facilities.

Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir confirmed the completion of destroying underground routes in the area, reporting the discovery of Iranian-made weapons intended for northern Israeli communities. Zamir vowed to prevent Hezbollah's rebuilding of capabilities, warning that "every village where terrorist infrastructure is established and militants are present exposes itself to danger." The Israeli military radio reported that forces withdrew from Al-Taher heights after a three-month operation, consolidating in positions near the Beaufort Castle, having controlled above and below-ground facilities.

The withdrawal coincided with continued shelling and explosions in southern Lebanon, including strikes on the town of Mansouri, hitting a school, as well as Barishit and Wadi al-Hujair. The Israeli military radio claimed approximately 50 militants were killed during the operations, after offering them a chance to surrender. It also reported thwarting drone-delivered resupply attempts.

Al-Taher heights, situated between Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh al-Fawqa north of the Litani River, holds strategic importance due to its elevation of approximately 600 meters, providing extensive observation over southern Lebanon. Zamir emphasized ongoing efforts to prevent Hezbollah's re-establishment in the region and urged the Lebanese army to "demonstrate effectiveness on the ground," warning that the current situation could impact the agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv.

Zamir stated the "yellow line" would remain under Israeli control, with continued intelligence, ground, and air operations monitoring border developments. These events occur despite a June 26 understanding for a gradual Israeli withdrawal in exchange for the Lebanese army's deployment. Continued military operations and Israeli measures to establish a security perimeter along large parts of the border suggest further tension is likely.
