Top Hamas Commander in Khan Younis Eliminated in Israeli Airstrike

The Israeli military and Shin Bet conducted a targeted airstrike in Khan Younis, Gaza, overnight, eliminating Mohammed al-Yazouri, identified as the commander of Hamas's Khan Younis brigade within its military wing. Security officials confirmed al-Yazouri was the intended target. Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported that Israel struck al-Yazouri from the air as he was walking in the Al-Mawasi area of southern Gaza.

Hamas sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that al-Yazouri was not immediately identified due to his body being dismembered. The sudden loss of contact prompted associates to investigate his status, with confirmation of his death emerging early in the morning among other strike casualties. According to two sources, al-Yazouri assumed command of the Khan Younis brigade shortly after the assassinations of two other military wing leaders, Azz al-Din al-Haddad and Mohammed Awda. He had previously commanded central and western sectors of Khan Younis before becoming brigade commander.

The IDF confirmed the strike, stating that both the IDF and Shin Bet eliminated al-Yazouri in the Khan Younis area. The IDF noted that al-Yazouri held various positions within the brigade, including deputy commander, commander of the combat support battalion, and head of intelligence. In his role, he was responsible for directing the brigade's operatives and advancing terror plots against Israeli forces and civilians.

Al-Yazouri had recently been involved in planning dozens of terror attacks and attempting to rebuild the brigade's capabilities, which have been significantly degraded during the ongoing conflict. The same strike also eliminated Khudheifa Ammar, a company commander, and Mohammed Bahjat Rachi, another Hamas operative in the Khan Younis brigade. Southern Command forces are deployed in the area and will continue operations to neutralize threats.
