Slushie Machines Across Israel Found Heavily Contaminated
An investigation by mako health has revealed severe sanitary issues in slushie and iced coffee machines throughout Israel, with some found to contain 20 times the legal limit of bacteria. The machines, commonly found in kiosks, gas stations, and snack bars, were observed to be dirty, moldy, and stained, with problematic dispensing tubes.
A sample taken from a raspberry slushie machine in north Tel Aviv and sent for laboratory testing confirmed these visual concerns. The sample revealed a total bacterial count of 200,000 per gram, significantly exceeding the Israeli standard of 10,000 per gram. Experts warn that such contamination can lead to serious illnesses, including severe diarrhea and abdominal pain, potentially requiring hospitalization, and in rare cases, even death.
Dr. Dan Baral, head of microbiology labs at the Public Health Association, stated that a bacterial count 20 times the standard indicates poor sanitary conditions, likely due to unclean equipment or low-quality raw materials. Dr. Hozima Hamaissi, coordinator of infectious diseases at Clalit Health Services, explained that improperly maintained machines can become breeding grounds for microorganisms like Salmonella and Listeria, which can cause gastrointestinal distress and, in severe instances, be life-threatening, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Experts emphasize that the visible cleanliness of a machine does not guarantee internal hygiene, as hard-to-reach areas like tubes and seals can harbor bacteria. Dr. Liat Rinsky-Halivni, an occupational medicine specialist, stressed that the responsibility for machine safety lies with business owners through regular cleaning, maintenance, and staff training, rather than the consumer's ability to detect contamination.
Consumers are advised to observe the general cleanliness of the establishment and the machine itself before purchasing. Business owners are urged to perform thorough daily cleaning, disinfection, and drying of machines, and to avoid leaving drinks in them overnight.
