Slushie and Iced Coffee Machines Found Heavily Contaminated

A recent investigation by mako health has uncovered severe sanitation issues in slushie and iced coffee machines across Israel. Many machines were found to be dirty, covered in mold and stains, with problematic dispensing tubes. A sample of slushie taken from a kiosk in north Tel Aviv and sent for laboratory testing confirmed these visual concerns, revealing bacterial levels 20 times higher than the Israeli standard.

Dr. Dan Barel, head of microbiology labs at the Public Health Association, explained that a general bacterial count of 200,000 per gram, compared to the standard of 10,000, indicates a poor sanitary level. He stated that this suggests unclean equipment, low-quality raw materials, and a product unfit for consumption.

Dr. Hozima Hamaissi, coordinator of infectious diseases at Clalit Health Services, warned that poorly maintained machines can become breeding grounds for microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, and mold. She noted that contaminated drinks could lead to symptoms ranging from diarrhea and abdominal pain to hospitalization and, in extreme cases, death, particularly for vulnerable populations. She also highlighted the risk of cross-contamination from unwashed hands.

Experts emphasize that consumers cannot always detect contamination by taste or appearance. Dr. Julie Schliefer, a family medicine specialist, advised consumers to be wary of visibly dirty machines or dispensing areas, stating that what is seen externally is only a fraction of the internal system, which can harbor hard-to-clean areas. Dr. Lilach Rinsky-Halevy, an occupational medicine specialist, stressed that the responsibility for safety lies with business owners through regular cleaning, maintenance, and staff training, not with the consumer's ability to detect contamination.
