West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Found in Ashdod, Authorities Expand Prevention Efforts

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has captured mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus in the city of Ashdod. Following this discovery, the ministry has instructed all local authorities across Israel to intensify their prevention, monitoring, public awareness, and control measures against the virus.

The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. While many infected individuals show no symptoms, some may develop severe neurological illness, including encephalitis or meningitis, and in rare cases, death. The ministry's directive aims to curb the spread of the virus and protect public health, especially during the warmer months when mosquito populations are typically higher.

Local authorities are expected to increase surveillance of mosquito populations, implement targeted spraying campaigns, and educate the public on how to reduce mosquito breeding sites around their homes and communities. Residents are advised to take personal protective measures, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and ensuring window and door screens are intact to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.
