AIG Insurance Workers Strike Over Pay, AI Integration
Hundreds of AIG insurance company employees in Israel will begin a strike on Friday after negotiations between management, the workers' committee, and the Histadrut labor union collapsed. The dispute centers on salary, employment conditions, and the implementation of an AI-powered voice agent that employees fear could reduce job security.
The year-long negotiation process concluded without agreement on Thursday. The strike will halt operations at sales, customer service, and claims centers, as well as the company's headquarters. This is expected to impact customers' ability to receive human assistance for claims and policy management. It remains unclear if essential services will operate in a limited capacity or if digital services will continue uninterrupted.
The strike follows a declaration of a labor dispute by the Histadrut and the AIG workers' committee approximately one month ago. The committee cited significant gaps concerning wages, employment terms, and job security. A key point of contention is AIG's plan to introduce an AI voice agent to handle tasks currently performed by customer service representatives. Employees are concerned this technology will alter their work and lead to layoffs, demanding that the introduction of such tools be regulated by a collective agreement.
As a show of force on Wednesday, 150 employees simultaneously left their workstations and gathered in the building's center for several hours, ceasing work. AIG, an insurance company primarily specializing in general insurance like car and home policies, operates with relative independence despite its American ownership. The company reported a 36% increase in profit for the first half of the year, reaching 113 million shekels compared to 83 million shekels in the same period last year.
AIG stated, "Unfortunately, the workers' committee continues to entrench its positions, preventing agreements. Throughout the negotiations, including today's meeting, management presented significant proposals to reach an agreement. We did not find a willingness from the other side to take the necessary steps. The company is committed to its customers and will make every effort to ensure customer service is not harmed." The company expressed hope that the committee would reconsider and show genuine willingness to reach an agreement.
