Israel Destroys Hezbollah Tunnels in Southern Lebanon, Raises Alert

The Israeli military announced Thursday evening that it had destroyed extensive Hezbollah underground tunnel infrastructure on the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, completing the organization of the security zone. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation, which involved over 1,100 tons of explosives, neutralized a strategic terror infrastructure built over two decades with Iranian funding and planning. This network was intended to serve as a base for conquering the Galilee and controlling observation and fire over Metula and Kiryat Shmona.

The operation, codenamed "Operation Northern Shield," involved intense ground and air force actions over recent months. Israeli forces from various units, including the commando division and the Yahalom engineering unit, exerted pressure on Hezbollah operatives in the underground facilities. Initial efforts focused on gaining control of the surface through ambushes and attacks on tunnel entrances, followed by underground operations to neutralize the capability to plan and execute attacks. Some militants fled, while others were eliminated, including one in a close-quarters engagement by the Egoz unit.

During the operation, eight underground tunnels totaling over 5,400 meters were located, containing significant weaponry, including dozens of explosive drones, UAVs, machine guns, anti-tank missiles, hundreds of mines, RPGs, and other military equipment. The destruction of these tunnels, along with similar efforts in the Beaufort ridge and surrounding villages, aims to prevent their use for entrenchment and terror planning. The IDF emphasized that efforts to remove threats to northern Israeli communities are ongoing.

Following the operation, Israel's security establishment raised its alert level due to concerns of an Iranian or Hezbollah response. The Northern Command and Air Force are prepared for potential actions. Israel is preparing for scenarios involving multiple days of fighting, while also conveying messages to Iran and Hezbollah that Israel does not seek escalation but is ready for deterioration. Hezbollah has reportedly sought Iranian assistance amid these developments, as Iran threatens intervention if Israel expands its operations.

Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated Israel's stance, stating, "We are dealing with the Ali Taher ridge. To be continued." Following the completion of the underground complex's demolition, the IDF plans to redeploy its defensive array along the border, adjusting to the evolving security assessment.
