Israel Destroys Hezbollah Tunnel Complex, Warns Iran Amid Tensions
The Israeli military announced Thursday the successful destruction of a significant Hezbollah tunnel complex on the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, utilizing 1,100 tons of explosives. This operation, which targeted the main underground infrastructure of the Iran-backed group in the area, was described by officials as a major blow. The destroyed tunnels, spanning over two kilometers, contained Iranian-made rockets, missiles, drones, and a central command center for Hezbollah's "Badr" unit. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the infrastructure, built over two decades with Iranian funding and planning, was intended to serve as a base for conquering the Galilee and controlling observation and fire over northern Israeli towns.
Following the operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are on high alert for a range of scenarios, including multi-front conflict, particularly with Iran. Security officials have warned of potential Iranian retaliation during the upcoming holidays, noting that Iran may seek to divert pressure from U.S. sanctions towards Israel. While no direct indication of an Iranian decision to attack has been detected, recent Iranian missile launches near Israel's border are seen as a provocation. Israel maintains a prepared target bank for Iran and has vowed a powerful response to any aggression, with Netanyahu reiterating his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The IDF's operational readiness has been heightened across all fronts, adopting an "offensive defense" posture. This includes increased troop presence beyond known borders and deep within enemy territory. The military is preparing for various responses from Hezbollah, ranging from drone attacks to rocket fire, and is also monitoring the situation with the Houthis in Yemen. In the West Bank, security forces have increased their presence and conducted arrests in anticipation of potential holiday-related attacks. The Israeli Air Force has also adapted its border defense strategy, implementing a rapid response concept to counter escalating threats.
