Protest at Israeli Embassy in Bangkok Over Tourist Behavior

Hundreds of people demonstrated Thursday in front of the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok, demanding greater respect for Thai laws and culture from Israeli tourists. The protest was fueled by growing discontent over the behavior of some foreign visitors, particularly Israelis, and concerns about land purchases by Israeli nationals.

Leading the rally was Thai media mogul and political activist Sondhi Limthongkul, who adopted a strong stance. He declared that the era of "diplomatic restraint" was over, asserting that Thailand's hospitality should not be mistaken for weakness or an invitation to act with impunity.

Protesters carried signs urging Israelis to "respect the Thai people" and stating "Thailand is not for sale." Some signs displayed more aggressive messages, including one targeting Jewish people and calling for them to leave the country. An Israeli flag defaced with the slogan "Boycott Israel" was also present.

In response to the demonstration, Rami Teplitzky, deputy head of the Israeli mission in Thailand, addressed the crowd in Thai. He assured them that the embassy was taking the complaints "seriously" and was collaborating with local authorities to address reports concerning Israeli tourist conduct. The embassy also noted its prior development, with Thai government bodies, of a code of conduct for Israeli visitors, emphasizing adherence to local laws and customs. It reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong Israel-Thailand relations and encouraging Israeli tourists to respect the host country's population.
