Maccabi Tel Aviv Co-Owner Urges Resolution in Ownership Dispute

Richard "Rich" Dietz, a co-owner of the Israeli basketball club Maccabi Tel Aviv, has penned a letter to Shimon Mizrahi, the club's chairman, urging a resolution to the ongoing ownership dispute ahead of the new Jewish year. Dietz expressed optimism that a solution can be found, emphasizing the need to set aside personal "passions" for the betterment of the club.

The dispute centers on the ownership structure of Maccabi Tel Aviv, a significant issue for the team's fans. Dietz's letter, sent as a New Year's greeting, addresses the "media circus" surrounding the conflict, which he believes distracts from the team's promising roster. He criticized Mizrahi and fellow co-owner Oded Kattash for excluding him from discussions about the club's future and for their "failed" attempt to bring in Jason Levien as a new controlling owner, citing contractual irregularities and a lack of fan support for an "external and disconnected" figure.

Dietz anticipates that arbitration proceedings will likely extend through a significant portion of the upcoming season, creating a "murky atmosphere" around the club. He referenced Mizrahi's past successes in brokering compromises, including facilitating a historic basketball game in Belgium in 1977 and securing the 2004 Final Four for Tel Aviv during the Second Intifada.

"My door is always open for a serious and good-faith discussion on a framework for exiting the current situation," Dietz stated. He believes a resolution is possible that addresses both parties' concerns, safeguards Mizrahi's legacy, and ensures the club's connection with its fans remains strong. Dietz concluded by calling for new beginnings in the new year, urging the setting aside of "passions" that hinder progress and the building of a better future, which he believes is what the fans desire.
