Chief Rabbi Visits Prisons Ahead of High Holidays, Emphasizes Humanity and Order
Israel's Sephardic Chief Rabbi, David Yosef, conducted a special visit to the Prison Service facilities in anticipation of the High Holy Days, including Rosh Hashanah. The visit commenced with a festive "Hamatat Kosit" (raising of the cup) ceremony in the office of the Commissioner of Prisons, Kobi Yaakobi. During the ceremony, Rabbi Yosef praised the commissioner for his efforts in strengthening "prison governance" while simultaneously advancing rehabilitation programs and upholding humane treatment.
Following the initial ceremony, Rabbi Yosef toured the Nitzan detention facility. There, he delivered words of Torah and encouragement to the staff and detainees, accompanied by the facility's rabbis and deputy commander. He also participated in a celebratory "Hamatat Kosit" for the command and combatants of the Prison Service in the Central District. In his remarks, he highlighted the connection between their operational mission and the values of responsibility and dedication, particularly relevant during the High Holy Days.
