Ben Gurion Airport Prepares for Record Holiday Travel Amidst Security Concerns

Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) is bracing for a peak travel day with approximately 100,000 passengers expected before the upcoming Jewish High Holidays. The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) anticipates a total of 2.5 million travelers passing through TLV during the holiday period.

In response to significant disruptions experienced last month due to a strike that halted the baggage handling system, the IAA is deploying reinforced staff and resources. The previous incident occurred when workers left their shifts early, refusing to work overtime, which led to unusual delays and congestion. The aviation industry has also raised concerns about ongoing staff shortages in baggage handling teams.

Amidst the holiday rush, the airport is also managing security incidents related to flights to Uman, Ukraine, where thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov for Rosh Hashanah. In recent days, dozens of draft dodgers have been apprehended at TLV while attempting to board flights to Uman. Two individuals were detained just before boarding a Wizz Air flight to Poland on Sunday.

The IAA is urging passengers to arrive at the airport earlier than usual, to check flight schedules in advance, and to ensure all necessary travel documents are prepared before departing for the airport to prevent further delays.
