Thailand Warns Israelis Against Misconduct, Threatens Stricter Measures

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeu, has warned that the "unlawful behavior" of Israeli citizens could damage bilateral relations. The statement, made on Wednesday, September 9, during a meeting with Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Alona Fisher-Kham, comes in response to a series of incidents involving Israelis, negative local media coverage, and anti-Israeli demonstrations in Bangkok and Phuket.

While most complaints concern tourists, the minister noted that Israelis engaged in business or long-term residency have also been involved in violations of Thai law. Phuangketkeu stated that authorities intend to "strengthen control and take tougher measures" against such individuals. He emphasized that these policies would apply equally to all foreigners breaking the law, regardless of nationality, citing recent deportations of citizens from both Israel and France as examples.

The minister also addressed the conduct of Israeli tourists, noting that some incidents have "offended local residents" and demonstrated disrespect for Thai culture, traditions, and lifestyle. Ambassador Fisher-Kham responded that Israelis visit Thailand for relaxation and to escape conflict, not to import it. She added that the embassy is working with local authorities on information campaigns encouraging tourists to respect laws, customs, and local communities.

Criticism of Israelis in Thailand has intensified recently, with negative reports about Israeli tourists appearing in local media almost daily. Protests have occurred near the Israeli embassy in Bangkok and in Phuket, with another demonstration planned for Thursday, September 10. Some Thai media have also called for limiting the stay of Israelis to 15 days.
