Thailand Summons Israeli Ambassador Over Tourist Misconduct

Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow summoned Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, on Tuesday following several incidents involving Israeli tourists. The meeting, held in Bangkok, addressed concerns that some foreign visitors, including Israelis, have disregarded local customs and culture, particularly in the popular tourist areas of Phuket and Phang Nga. The minister emphasized that while Thailand welcomes all visitors, "tourists, regardless of their nationality, cannot do whatever they want." The Thai government is now seeking more significant measures from Israeli authorities to prevent future incidents.

Ambassador Fisher-Kamm acknowledged the concerns regarding the behavior of some Israeli nationals and proposed creating a guide outlining rules and expected conduct in Thailand. This guide, intended to raise awareness among Israeli tourists before their arrival, could be distributed by the Israeli embassy, airlines, and travel agencies. The ambassador also reportedly raised concerns about what she described as growing hostility towards Israelis and Jews in Thailand.

The summons occurs just before a planned protest on September 10th outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok. Organizers intend to denounce the activities of foreign companies allegedly operating through Thai nominees, with a particular focus on Israeli nationals, as well as Chinese, Russian, and other foreign citizens residing in the country.
