Nearly Half a Million Israeli Households Switch to Private Electricity Suppliers

Nearly 450,000 Israeli households have switched from the state-owned Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) to private electricity suppliers since the market opened to competition in July 2024. Data released by the Electricity Authority reveals that the trend is accelerating, with over 20,000 consumers making the switch in August alone, marking a new monthly record.

The leading city in this transition is Modi'in Illit, where one-third of households have left the IEC. Other cities with significant adoption rates include Beitar Illit, Yavne, and Rosh Ha'ayin. Notably, larger cities like Bnei Brak, Petah Tikva, and Rishon LeZion also show high percentages of residents moving to private suppliers, with 21%, 21%, and 20% respectively.

Consumers who switch can benefit from savings of 5% to 21% on their electricity bills, depending on the plan they choose. The Electricity Authority emphasizes that while consumers switch to private suppliers for their electricity, the physical infrastructure remains under the control of the IEC, which continues to be responsible for maintenance and repairs.

The data indicates a higher rate of switching in cities with significant Haredi populations. The report highlights the top 10 cities with the most household switches, including Modi'in Illit (33%), Be'er Yaakov (29%), and Modi'in Maccabim Re'ut (28%).
