Top 3 Summer Fruits Israelis Should Eat Now
As summer fruits begin to disappear from shelves, an Israeli dietician is urging consumers to prioritize watermelon, apricots, and grapes. Michal Sokman, a dietician with the Maccabi Health Services Central District, highlighted these fruits' unique nutritional benefits and seasonality in an article for Mako. She emphasized that despite the year-round availability of many fruits, nature still dictates a seasonal schedule, and these summer offerings are best enjoyed now.
Watermelon, composed of about 90% water, is crucial for maintaining hydration during hot weather. It is also a rich source of lycopene, an antioxidant linked to heart health and protection against oxidative stress, and citrulline, an amino acid that aids blood circulation. A recommended serving is approximately 300 grams.
Apricots, with their short harvest season in Israel, are noted for their high beta-carotene content, which the body converts to vitamin A, essential for vision, skin, and immune function. They also provide potassium for muscle function and fiber for satiety. Three to four medium apricots constitute a serving.
Grapes, a staple of Israeli agriculture, are at their peak during summer. Red and black varieties contain polyphenols that support cardiovascular health. Sokman suggests grapes are a healthy alternative to processed sweets, with a recommended serving of about 150 grams (20-25 berries).
Choosing local, seasonal produce not only ensures freshness but also supports domestic agriculture, Sokman added.
