12 Nations Ban Trade With Israeli Settlements; US Envoy Criticizes UK
Twelve countries have jointly announced a nationwide ban on trade with products originating from "illegal Israeli settlements." This significant diplomatic move signals a coordinated international stance against settlements in the West Bank.
In response to the UK's imposition of sanctions on the West Bank, the U.S. Ambassador to Israel stated that there would be an American response. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also commented on reports concerning dialogue between Prime Minister Netanyahu and the UAE's ruler.
Hussein al-Sheikh, deputy chairman of the Palestinian Authority and designated successor to Mahmoud Abbas, welcomed the sanctions imposed by European countries and Canada. The UK officially declared sanctions "against illegal settlements in the West Bank."
In reaction to the UK's actions, Israeli Foreign Minister G Gideon Sa'ar announced retaliatory measures against Britain. U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, pointed out what he described as British hypocrisy in imposing sanctions on the West Bank.
