Israel Braces for Unusually Wet Autumn with Potential for Flooding

Israel's meteorological service is forecasting an exceptionally rainy autumn, with precipitation levels potentially doubling normal amounts in October. Updated climate models indicate a significant shift from summer heat to unusually wet conditions, with rainfall expected to reach 170% to 200% of the norm across much of the country. The central and southern coastal areas could see over 200% of their usual rainfall. Despite the heavy rains, air temperatures are predicted to remain warmer than average, creating a contrast between warm weather and intense downpours.

The heavy rainfall is expected to continue into November, with northern and central regions receiving 120% to 130% of the norm, and southern areas getting 130% to 150%. The meteorological service warns that the intensity and localized nature of these rains pose a significant risk of flash floods in densely populated coastal cities and dangerous flash floods in desert regions.

In response to the potential threats, the meteorological service has held closed-door meetings with relevant ministries and rescue agencies to plan for flood mitigation and response scenarios. Advanced artificial intelligence weather models using machine learning have corroborated the meteorological service's findings, predicting that the excess precipitation will persist through December, indicating a prolonged wet season.
