National Insurance to Distribute Benefits to Israelis Today

The National Insurance Institute (Bituah Leumi) will transfer unemployment benefits and income support payments to eligible recipients on Tuesday. The Institute is the Israeli government agency responsible for providing social benefits and allowances to citizens and residents.

Unemployment benefits are intended to provide temporary income for individuals who were employed and have stopped working, until they can re-enter the labor market. Income support is a benefit designed to offer financial security to individuals with little or no income, provided they meet eligibility criteria. This means one does not need to be completely unemployed to be considered; even those working with low wages may qualify for partial benefits. Eligibility is determined by factors including income of the individual and their spouse, both from work and other sources. Assets, marital status, and vehicle ownership or use may also be considered. Age is a significant factor, with eligibility typically starting at age 20, though it can begin at 18 in certain situations. Residency in Israel for at least 24 consecutive months is generally required, with exceptions for shorter periods depending on status and circumstances. Recipients are often obligated to register with and report to the employment service, with refusal of offered work or non-cooperation potentially affecting eligibility.
