Maccabi Healthcare Services Launches Annual Flu Vaccination Campaign
Maccabi Healthcare Services has initiated its annual influenza vaccination campaign this week, ordering approximately 250,000 doses for the season. This year's supply includes the HD vaccine, a booster dose specifically for individuals over 65 and other at-risk groups, alongside an inactivated injectable vaccine. A nasal spray vaccine, FluMist, intended for those aged two to 49, will also be available later.
Vaccines are currently being distributed to Maccabi clinics nationwide and will continue to arrive gradually until the Sukkot holiday. Suwar Matta, Chief Nurse for Maccabi's Northern District, urged members to get vaccinated early to build immunity before the peak of winter, emphasizing that full protection develops about two weeks after inoculation.
Global production and supply chain issues, stemming from updated vaccine formulations, have caused a delay in vaccine availability in Israel at the start of the season. Hagar Waxler, Director of Nursing at Maccabi, advised members to schedule appointments in advance, noting that larger quantities are expected in October. She highlighted that last year saw significant infection rates and hospital strain, underscoring the importance of early vaccination.
While data from the Southern Hemisphere suggests this flu season may not be exceptionally severe in overall numbers, Dr. David Sasha, an infectious disease specialist at Maccabi, noted a concerning rise in pediatric cases. He cautioned that Southern Hemisphere data is only an indicator and that the virus can evolve. Children under five are particularly vulnerable to complications, and last year saw fatalities among healthy children due to influenza complications. Despite viral mutations, the vaccine provided over 50% protection, which is crucial for those at high risk of severe illness.
