Kobi Refua Resigns as Hapoel Eilat Professional Director Over Distance

Kobi Refua has resigned from his position as professional director for Hapoel Eilat, a Liga Bet (fourth tier) club, citing the "enormous distance" as too high a price to pay. Refua, who had signed a lucrative contract worth NIS 400,000 annually just this past summer, stated that he does not believe in managing remotely and needs to be present throughout the week. He expressed that while he built something "truly beautiful" with the team, bringing in "star players the league has never seen," the personal cost was too great.

Refua emphasized that the distance was the sole reason for his departure, refuting any suggestion that it was due to the team's performance, which had recently secured two consecutive wins. He explained that the heavy toll on his family life was unsustainable, and remaining would have meant continuing to pay a significant personal price. He also noted that the "star players" were attracted to the club because of him and that he had communicated his decision to them.

Despite his departure, Refua expressed confidence in Hapoel Eilat's future, predicting they would be promoted twice in the next three years. He stated he enjoyed the challenge of bringing in players and managing the team, which he felt put Eilat "on the map." He also indicated he would continue to offer advice and assistance to the club, with whom he maintained good relationships.

Looking ahead, Refua suggested he still has "a lot to give" to Israeli football and might consider returning to coaching in higher leagues after a period of rest. He affirmed his continued passion for the sport, stating, "We are football people and live football."
