Maccabi Haifa's Sporting Director Lior Refaelov Faces Fan Criticism

Maccabi Haifa's professional director, Lior Refaelov, faced unprecedented fan criticism during the team's 2-1 victory over Hapoel Petah Tikva on Saturday. For the first time, Refaelov, a former club legend, heard boos and chants of "Lior, resign" from the stands. The dissatisfaction appears to stem from the team's performance in the opening matches of the season and the roster construction. Fans also expressed a desire to see player Guy Melamed receive more playing time, with boos directed at a substitution that brought on Silva Kani instead of Melamed.

A source within Maccabi Haifa acknowledged Refaelov's connection to last season's struggles, stating that the current season is a "year of correction" for him. Refaelov must prove he deserves the trust placed in him and regain the fans' confidence. Despite the criticism, the club is reportedly pleased with new signing Bruninho, a Brazilian player who scored and assisted in the match, and Omri Glazer, whose performance suggests the sale of a previous goalkeeper did not weaken the team.

Additionally, the club is encouraged by the performances of summer signings Andrea Novakovski and Nigel Lonwijk. Lonwijk, in particular, has improved significantly after a slow start. Refaelov's success will be measured by the continued development of these players, as well as Pedro Brazão.
