Maccabi Haifa's Barak Bachar and Lior Refaelov Strengthen Partnership Ahead of New Season
The professional relationship between Lior Refaelov, Maccabi Haifa's sporting director, and Barak Bachar, the team's head coach, has experienced many ups and downs. However, ahead of the upcoming season, extensive discussions during the break have clarified roles and improved cooperation. Their bond has grown beyond the pitch, including playing paddle tennis together and close family ties.
During Bachar's first tenure, his partnership with then-sporting director Gal Alberman was strained despite winning three championships. Bachar preferred autonomy in the locker room and limited Alberman's involvement, leading to disagreements. In contrast, Refaelov arrived last season as a club icon with vast international connections and insisted on hiring a foreign coach to implement a high-pressing style. The initial appointment of Diego Flores proved disastrous, resulting in Flores' dismissal and Bachar's return after a brief conversation with Refaelov.
Last season's performance was disappointing, with poor results and early elimination from European competition. Tensions arose over player selections, but the duo agreed that signings must satisfy both. Now, they meet daily to discuss training and tactics, with Refaelov managing transfers but requiring Bachar's approval for all players. Their collaboration is described as excellent, with mutual respect and shared vision.
A recent example of their cooperation involved goalkeeper Georgi Yarmakov, who requested a salary raise or transfer due to a €3 million offer. Although Refaelov planned to increase his salary, Bachar insisted on signing Omri Glazer, a player he trusts more for leadership and quality. Refaelov agreed, deciding to sell Yarmakov and bring in Glazer despite higher costs.
Both understand this season is critical: Refaelov cannot afford a second consecutive failure, and Bachar faces pressure not to fail for a fourth year. Success could elevate the club, while failure may prompt another professional overhaul by owner Yaakov Shahar.
