Kobi Refua Resigns as Bnei Eilat Manager Citing Heavy Personal Cost

Kobi Refua has resigned as the professional manager of Bnei Eilat, a team in Israel's Liga Bet, just months after signing a lucrative contract. Refua, who joined the club in the summer on a reported annual salary of 400,000 shekels plus benefits, cited the "enormous distance" and "heavy price" as the reasons for his departure. He explained that he could not manage effectively from afar or work from home, emphasizing the need to be present for the team's daily operations.

Refua defended his tenure, stating that he brought in "a battery of stars" that the league had never seen and that he signed all the players he desired. He expressed confidence that the team, which he left after two consecutive wins, is strong enough to be promoted, despite needing further improvement and cohesion. He also noted that his arrival attracted top players who believed in the club's vision.

He acknowledged that some might attribute his resignation to factors other than distance, but insisted that the distance was the sole reason. Refua stated that he enjoyed his daily work and succeeded in putting Eilat on the map, and that the team has the highest level of facilities. He maintained that he and the club's management parted on good terms and that he would continue to offer advice and assistance.

Looking ahead, Refua expressed his belief that Bnei Eilat will be promoted twice in the next three years. Regarding his own future, he indicated that he still has much to offer in top-tier football but needs a period of rest after the demanding role.
