Kobi Refua Departs Hapoel Eilat After One Match Amidst Million-Shekel Project

Kobi Refua has concluded his tenure as professional manager for Hapoel Eilat, a club he joined this summer with the ambitious goal of leading them to Israel's top leagues. Refua, who signed a lucrative three-year contract reportedly worth NIS 400,000 annually, including a car, fuel card, and hotel accommodations, has stepped down after just one league match. The team secured a victory in the opening round of Liga Bet, but logistical challenges and the long travel distances to Eilat ultimately led to Refua's departure.

Refua was instrumental in assembling a squad of high-profile players for Liga Bet, including Gidi Kanyuk, Gil Yitzhak, and Ofek Fishler, all recruited with significant salaries for the division. Despite the initial investment and the opening win, Refua cited the travel difficulties as the primary reason for his decision. He will transition to a role as a professional consultant for the club.

Hapoel Eilat's management, led by Natalie Vaturi, expressed understanding and respect for Refua's decision, acknowledging the family considerations and the demanding nature of daily involvement in Eilat. They confirmed that coach Meir Cohen will continue to manage the team in Liga Bet, with the existing star players remaining with the club. Refua himself stated his commitment to supporting the team and contributing to their goals in his new advisory capacity.
