Israeli Arab Party Faces Internal Crisis Over Candidate's Withdrawal

Samir Abu Zeid, head of the Eilaboun Council and a candidate for the second seat in the Israeli Arab political party Hadash (The Democratic Front for Peace and Equality), has spoken out about the internal crisis surrounding fellow candidate Jaafar Farrah.

Abu Zeid stated that he visited Farrah in the hospital after a Hadash secretariat meeting to check on his health and discuss the candidacy. He explained that he had informed Farrah of his intention to run for the second seat prior to the meeting. A statement was later issued by Hadash and Farrah's lawyers indicating that Farrah had decided not to continue his candidacy. This led to the party opening nominations until midnight, during which Abu Zeid submitted his candidacy.

Abu Zeid acknowledged that Farrah was the constitutionally recognized candidate but noted that his withdrawal would create a vacancy. He told Farrah that if Farrah decided to continue his candidacy, Abu Zeid would withdraw his own. A decision was made the previous day to have a single consensus candidate for the second seat, contingent on Farrah's continued resignation.

Abu Zeid emphasized that he did not intend to replace anyone unless Farrah formally resigned. He recounted that while visiting Farrah in the hospital, in the presence of family and others, Farrah stated he would make his decision after ensuring his health was stable. Abu Zeid clarified that Farrah had consulted with friends and supporters on Thursday, and the following day, a delegation including his lawyer conveyed his decision to step down, prompting Hadash to issue its statement and call for the secretariat meeting.

The party is reportedly divided into two camps: one pressuring Farrah to withdraw, and another supporting him. Abu Zeid reiterated that Farrah had indicated he would decide after recovering, and current media reports suggest he has taken a stance. However, Abu Zeid noted that Farrah himself had previously held two positions and was under significant pressure to make a final decision quickly.

Abu Zeid described the situation as an unprecedented crisis and problem for Hadash, attributing it to public pressure on Farrah and media attention on the party. He expressed hope that the leadership, including Farrah, would navigate the situation wisely.
