Jerusalem Cafe Closes on Saturdays Amid Ultra-Orthodox Protests
The "Ba-Simta" cafe in Jerusalem has ceased operations on Saturdays following approximately two months of protests by ultra-Orthodox demonstrators. The cafe, managed by the "Jews for Jesus" organization, made the decision after its leadership deemed the situation had become a "difficult and painful" choice, according to its general director, Eli Birnbaum. Birnbaum stated the decision was made out of responsibility to customers, their faith, and Israeli society, citing that the cafe had become a site of conflict and danger in recent months.
On September 5, activists attempted to set up a makeshift mobile cafe near the "Ba-Simta" premises. However, Jerusalem municipality inspectors arrived shortly thereafter and ordered the temporary establishment to be removed.
